DC-DC Charging For Lithium Batteries
Regarding DC-DC Chargers and solar controllers, you must change these to LiFePO4-specific models, which can charge your Lithium batteries to an entire 100% State of Charge. The advantage of using a LiFePO4 charge profile is that it allows users to get the total capacity out of their lithium battery, as the DC-DC LiFePO4 setting will prolong the battery life. You need a DC-DC charger to effectively manage the power input in a lithium battery.
**If you are charging from an alternator, you will need a DC-DC Charger that is designed to manage solar specific to lithium (LiFEPO4).
The DC-DC charger uses a 3-step process to charge the battery optimally:
- Bulk: In this step, the DC-DC battery charger converts the current from the alternator and fills in the secondary battery almost to the maximum.
- Absorption: Power levels off and stabilizes so the battery doesn’t ‘overcharge’ and damage cells.
- Float: This occurs when the battery is fully charged with its optimal charge capacity reached.
