What Is a Deep Cycle Battery?

What Is a Deep Cycle AGM Battery and its uses?

Let's take a closer look at AGM deep cycle batteries and their uses. Durable and long-lasting, 12v deep cycle batteries are the workhorse of the battery industry. This lead-acid battery is designed to emit a steady current of energy over a long period of time, making it ideal for use in applications that require continuous cycling (the process of charging a battery and discharging its energy into a required load).

Some models of deep cycle battery, such as a Giant Power deep cycle AGM battery also feature an “Absorbed Glass Mat” (AGM) of fine fibre Boron Silicate layered between their internal plates. The acid is contained within this glass mat, making the battery “unspillable” even when tipped on its side.

What can I use my deep cycle battery for?

Thanks to this “unspillable” design feature as well as a lack of gas emission in general use, deep cycle batteries are perfect for use in caravans, RVs, boats or as an auxiliary battery in a dual battery system. The sturdy casing also means that they can be taken off road and withstand engine vibration.

While deep cycle batteries are tough, they’re also sensitive to heat and therefore not suitable for mounting under vehicle bonnets unless fitted with an insulated covering. It’s also worth noting that deep cycle batteries aren’t designed to be cranking batteries and a continued high draw will result in damage to the battery, as well as a shortened life span.

How do I maintain my deep cycle battery?

Compared to the unsealed flooded cell battery, deep cycle batteries require very little maintenance and can last for up to three times longer. Their “unspillable” construction design eliminates the risk of lead sulphate forming on negative battery plates and there’s no need to top up electrolyte levels as you would with a flooded cell battery.

That being said, correctly charging your deep cycle battery is still an important maintenance procedure. Overcharging will compromise a battery’s internal structure and can result in a reduced lifespan. With deep cycle AGM batteries, the required rate of charging is 14.7v but most modern chargers will allow you to choose an “AGM” setting or even automatically detect the type of battery being charged.
