Designed for larger batteries anywhere from 20 to 200Ah, these portable car chargers automatically adjust to suit the battery type in any caravan, car or boat application and tailor a charging solution to suit its needs.
The Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger is a professional DC to DC adaptive 3-stage charger with built-in Bluetooth. For use in vehicles with dual battery systems in vehicles or on boats where the (smart) alternator and the start battery are used to charge the service battery. The unit can be monitored and programmed via Bluetooth, remotely controlled via a remote on/off switch, and has an engine running detection mechanism. The Orion-Tr Smart charger can be used in 12V or 24V systems and is suitable for lead acid and lithium batteries. Models are available up to 400W, and unlimited multiple units can be connected in parallel to increase output power. Suitable for high temperatures up to 55°C with a full rated output up to 40°C.
Bulk - During this stage the controller delivers as much charge current as possible to rapidly recharge the batteries.
Absorption - When the battery voltage reaches the absorption voltage setting, the controller switches to constant voltage mode. For lead acid batteries it is important that during shallow discharges the absorption time is kept short in order to prevent overcharging of the battery. After a deep discharge the absorption time is automatically increased to make sure that the battery is completely recharged. For lithium batteries absorption time is fixed, default 2 hours. The fixed or adaptive mode can be chosen
on the battery settings.
Float - During this stage, float voltage is applied to the battery to maintain it in a fully charged state. When the battery voltage drops substantially below this level, due to a high load for example, during at least 1 minute, a new charge cycle will be triggered.
Flexible Charge Algorithm - Programmable charge algorithm, and eight pre-programmed battery settings are configurable within the VictronConnect app.

***Victron DC-DC Chargers: Non-Isolated VS. Isolated:
The main difference with an isolated DC-DC charger is the connection to each battery as there is only one negative connection to the battery. Plus, there is no internal connection between the negatives in the battery. Some systems require an isolated DC to DC charger, this can be some of the reasons:
Typically, marine application with limited corrosion
Decrease noise from one battery system that will affect another battery system
Either unit can be used for systems that don’t require isolation, but the non-isolated requires one less wire to be installed.
One example of a non-isolated system is an automotive system, such as both batteries are negative and connected to the chassis of a vehicle. The system is non-isolated but either unit will suit.

Can be Paralleled to Increase Output-Current: An unlimited number of units can be connected in parallel to increase amps.
The Orion Smart DC-DC charger can be set up to only provide power when the engine is running. This is possible thanks to the built-in engine shutdown detection. This also prevents the onboard voltage of the vehicle from becoming too low. It is not necessary to intervene in the system of the vehicle, to install a separate motor run sensor or to intervene in the CAN-bus system. Apart from this detection, the Orion Smart DC-DC charger can also be activated by a forced allowed to charge feature, e.g. connected to the ignition switch.
Bluetooth Smart Built-In
Any Bluetooth enabled Apple or Android smart phone, tablet or other device can be used to monitor, change settings and to update the charger when new software features become available via the VictronConnect App.
All models are short circuit proof and can be paralleled to increase output current- An unlimited number of units can be connected in parallel.
High Temperature Protected-The output current will reduce at high ambient temperature.
IP43 Protection- When installed with the screw terminals oriented downwards.
Screw terminals- No special tools needed for installation.
Bluetooth Smart Enabled- Any Bluetooth enabled smart phone, tablet or other device can be used to monitor, to change settings and to update the charger when new software features become available.
Adaptive 3-Stage Charge Algorithm: Bulk – Absorption – Float- For lead acid batteries it is important that during shallow discharges the absorption time is kept short in order to prevent overcharging of the battery. After a deep discharge the absorption time is automatically increased to make sure that the battery is completely recharged.
For lithium batteries absorption time is fixed, default 2 hours.Alternatively, a fixed output voltage can be chosen.
Remote on-off- A remote on/off switch or relay contact can be connected to a two-pole connector. Alternatively, the H terminal (right) of the two-pole connector can be switched to battery plus, or the L terminal (left) of the two pole connector can be switched to battery minus (or the chassis of a vehicle, for example).
Smart Alternator Compatibility
Vehicle manufacturers are now introducing smart ECU (Engine Control Unit) controlled alternators to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Smart alternators deliver a variable output voltage and are shut down when they’re not needed. The converter has a engine running detection mechanism. This prevents the converter from discharging the starter battery when the alternator does not supply power. The Orion-Tr Smart Isolated DC-DC charger separates the starter battery from the service battery when the engine is not running.
*Please Note: A 60A circuit protection is required on both sides of the unit (start battery and auxiliary battery). Minimum cable size is 10mm2.
No Solar Regulator in the DC-DC Charger:
Victron have chosen to separate the charger and the solar regulators, these are the advantages:
You can choose the correct solar regulator to match your panels with the best efficiency for the solar charging.
The solar can be charging into the battery system simultaneously with the onboard vehicle charging
Without a solar regulator, the DC-DC charger will stay cheaper
Bluetooth Smart Enabled: Any Bluetooth enabled smart phone, tablet or other device can be used to monitor, to change settings and to update the charger when new software features become available
Remote on-off: A remote on/off switch or relay contact can be connected to a two-pole connector. Alternatively, the H terminal (right) of the two-pole connector can be switched to battery plus, or the L terminal (left) of the two–pole connector can be switched to battery minus (or the chassis of a vehicle, for example).
All models are short circuit proof and can be paralleled to increase output current: An unlimited number of units can be connected in parallel.
High Temperature Protected: The output current will reduce at high ambient temperature.

Okay I selected this DC to DC Charger to evaluate my planned dual battery install based on adding a 175Ah LiFePo4 battery as the aux power source with provision for supplemental charging via solar. The unit features Blue Tooth interface for status and control although it is not nearly as configurable as the range of Victron Solar charges. The so called graphing of the charge cycle is for indication only but I guess it kinda indicates if it is charging in Bulk mode, Absorption or Float modes. A feature that is sadly missing IMO is there is no provision for setting the maximum charge current value like on the Victron BT enabled solar chargers nor does it indicate the actual charge current or Watt hour input nor any history logging, Which means it is simply an "intelligent" DC to DC Charger that said the DC to DC Charger does function as advertised. In operation the unit can get fairly hot so I am planing to add a small computer fan to assist cooling as part of the final install. As I also require HF radio I wanted to be sure it was RFI quite and yes it seems very quite on the HF radio spectrum so that is an overall bonus for my usage case.
Make sure you power the unit up and you pair the unit with your device and set the battery type before you connect to your aux battery for the first time.
Control options include ignition On/Engine Running sense or simply use the automatic voltage sensing or you can manually force the unit to charge from within the Victron App.
Keep in mind this unit has only 3 high power DC connections B+ in, Ground and B+ out, which means you have to connect the Main supply ground and the Aux ground separately then connect to the unit ground, 2 ground connections would make some installations easier.
I would have given it 4.5 Stars but that isn't possible here the unit works well and certainly performs it's function, proper status of voltage and current as well as adjustable max current setting and some basic battery management would have been nice features to have however if those features aren't important to you or you just want a no nonsense DC to DC charger I'd 100% recommend it.
